Sri Lanka: Hand grenade lobbed at the house of Eastern Province Councilor

Unidentified men hurled a hand grenade Sunday early morning 2:00 a.m. at the residence of Eastern Province Council (EPC) member, S.M.Zubhair Hadjiar located along Ea’raavoor Girls School and bolted away. The grenade fell within the premises of the home close to the entrance and exploded. Zubhair escaped unhurt in the explosion and the house was undamaged.

Sri Lanka: Peradeniya Tamil undergrads agitate for release of student

Tamil students of the Arts Faculty of the Peradeniya University Friday handed over a memorandum to the Vice-chancellor requesting him to take immediate steps to release K. Umanath, a final year student, from police custody, enabling him to sit for his final examination scheduled to be held in three months, sources in Peredeniya said. Umanath is still being detained in Davulugala police station in Kandy district.

Sri Lanka: 2 SLA soldiers killed, 2 injured in Vadamaraadchi

A group of unidentified armed men opened fire and hurled hand grenades on the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camps in Yaakkarai and Kalikai areas in Karaveddi in Vadamraadchi Saturday midnight killing two soldiers and seriously injuring two, sources in Jaffna said. Thousands of SLA troops deployed in the above area launched a cordon and search operation, immediately after the attack, that continued till Sunday evening.

Sri Lanka: 233 families allowed to resettle in no-man zone in Jaffna

The committee appointed by Colombo Supreme Court to explore into the possibility of resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in areas inside Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zone (HSZ) in Valikaamam north met Saturday around 3:30 p.m in Palaali SLA Head Quarters and decided to allow resettlement in the first stage only in areas outside the HSZ within the 600 meter distance of no-man?s area, contrary to the hopes of the applicants for resettlement inside the HSZ, now occupied by the SLA.

Ms Imelda Sukumar has been appointed Government Agent of Vavuniyaa district with immediate effect. She has been instructed by the Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Public Administration to cover the administrative district of Killinochchi also. She had been earlier serving as the GA, Killinochchi district till she sustained injuries in the artillery attack by the Sri Lanka Army on the Killinochchi district secretariat recently, media sources said.

Sri Lanka: UPFA victory endorses war - GoSL spokesman

The United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government has claimed that the people of the Sabaragamuwa Province and North Central Province have “fully endorsed” the stand and policy of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in “defeating terrorism” as the ruling alliance won the elections in Sabaragamuwa with a majority of more than 125,000 votes (55.38%) against the UNP, which secured 40.53% of the votes. In North Central Province, the UPFA polled 56.37% and the UNP 37.64%, 100,000 less than the UPFA.
