Three years after the United Nations Security Council requested Luis Moreno-Ocampo, prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC), to investigate in Darfur, the Prosecutor said Monday that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Sudanese President, Omar Hassan Ahmad AL BASHIR, bears criminal responsibility in relation to 10 counts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Maavai Senathirajah, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP for Jaffna in a letter to Sri Lanka?s President Mahinda Rajapakse, protested that procedures instituted by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officials for Jaffna residents to obtain a ?Pass? to travel out of Jaffna require several days, and are causing ?tremendous hardships? to the public and demanded immediate withdrawal of the pass system. He accused Colombo of suppressing freedom of movement and of grossly violating basic human rights.

Sri Lanka: Indian PM’s Special Protection Group personnel arrive in Colombo

70 members of the Indian Special Protection Group (SPG), which provides proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and the members of his immediate family, have arrived in Colombo Sunday for security preparations for the upcoming SAARC summit, diplomatic sources in Colombo said. In addition to the SPG personnel, the Indian government has sought permission from Sri Lanka to bring three naval ships, which will be anchored in the outer-harbour of Colombo during the summit. The sources also added that there will be some air cover as well.

Sri Lanka: SC fixes inquiry on petition challenging EPC election results

Supreme Court Monday fixed the inquiry for August 21 into the petitions filed by three candidates of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) seeking the court to nullify the results of the Batticaloa district of the eastern Provincial Council election held on May 10 was not free and fair. At the last date of inquiry the SC issued notices on the respondents cited in the petition to appear in court on Monday, legal sources said.

Sri Lanka: 2 Police officers die in Vavuniyaa road accident

Two police officers were killed when the motorbike they were riding in collided with a police truck at the 40th milepost along Vavuniyaa-Mannaar road Monday night around 7.45 pm. Both police officers were attached to the Chettikulam police station, police spokesman Ranjit Gunasekara, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) told reporters.
