Sri Lanka Security forces, in a new security plan to reinforce defences in the Northern Forward Defense Lines (FDLs), have been deploying Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopters and new generation Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in reconnaissance missions along the FDLs during nights, sources in Jaffna said. Jaffna residents have reported seeing spy aircrafts near Vadamaraachi East and West, Kaangkeasanthurai, and near Jaffna lagoon, during the last few days.

The Sinhala nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which is opposed to Rajapaksa government’s move to hand over lands in Moothoor to India’s infrastructure investment of Coal-Fired Power Plant, warned Friday that it would launch a protest campaign against the ruling UPFA government if it fails to meet the requirements of the fishermen along four coastal divisions including Moothoor. The government should lift the restrictions on fishing and extend the duration allowed for fishing in Trincomalee’s coastal areas or pay monthly 20,000 rupees per family as relief for their livelihood until normalcy returns.

A Tamil civilian was shot dead Friday morning inside a hairdressing saloon located along Ferguson Road in Mukaththuvaaram in Colombo police division, according to complaints lodged with the Police by the victim’s relatives.

A 34-year-old Tamil civilian was abducted Thursday night while he was on his way to the residence of his friend, according to a complaint registered with Batticaloa police by his wife. The victim, Sundaranathan Selvakumar, is a former employee of Ceylinco Insurance company and was currently engaged in contract business. According to eyewitnesses, two armed men who were riding in a white van without number plate, abducted him at gun point.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka Friday decided to take up for inquiry the election petition filed by three voters of the Batticaloa district seeking the court to declare null and void the results of the East Provincial Council (EPC) election held on May 10, legal sources in Colombo said. The Court directed the registrar to send notices to the respondents to appear in court on the next date.

Sri Lanka Police arrested thirty civilians including ten Tamils into custody during a cordon and search operation conducted from Thursday night till Friday morning the Katunayake High Security Zone (HSZ), sources in Colombo said. The Katunayake international airport, and military installations are located within the HSZ.
