While Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said that the token strike it launched with the support of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Thursday was a success, the Sri Lanka Government led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa claimed in
the parliament that the strike ended in ‘utter failure’ due to lack of support from the working class, political sources in Colombo said. The workers were pressurised in all provinces to be present at the work by the government officials and the police.

Sri Lanka: Hakim takes oath as UNP national list parliamentarian

Rauf Hakim, leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) took oath as a national list parliamentarian with the Speaker W.J.M.Lokkubandara administering the oath when the parliament resumed its sitting Thursday morning, parliamentary sources said. Hakim resigned from the post of the councilor of the Eastern Provincial Council Tuesday evening.

Sri Lanka: 3 Sinhalese businessmen shot dead in Kalmunai

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Sinhalese businessmen who were traveling in a lorry in Kalmunai, 36 km southeast of Batticaloa, killing them dead on Quarry Road, Thursday around 9:00 a.m., Police said. The victims were from Wattegama in Kandy.
