Renegade Karuna deported to Sri Lanka

British Embassy spokesman Dominic Williams told BBC that Vinayagmoorthy Muralitharan, alias Karuna, had been removed from a UK detention centre and deported to Sri Lanka on 2 July, according to a BBC report. Karuna, a former Tiger commander who turned leader of a paramilitary group operated by the Sri Lanka Army in the East, completed a prison sentence in the UK, for the violation of UK’s immigration rules.

The victims do not complain to the police or speak of their suffering due to fear of being killed by the troops and policemen.

The Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake Thursday announced that two new political parties, Janatha Nidahas Peramuna (JNP), and Patriotic National Front (PNF), have been registered with the Department of Elections with effect from July 3. The JNP was formed by parliamentarian Wimal Weerawanse who broke away from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) with ten parliamentarians. The present parliamentary strength of the JVP is 27.

Sri Lanka: Abducted Tamil youth found shot dead in Trincomalee

A Tamil youth abducted on June 26 from his residence located in Paalaiyoothu was found shot dead at Thuvarankaadu junction, Thursday early morning, police sources said. The Uppuve’li Police visited the site where the body of the victim was lying, and removed the body to the Trincomalee general hospital for postmortem examination. The body had gunshot injuries to the head and the chest, hospital sources said.
