Wasantha Samarasinghe of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Monday tendered his resignation from the post of Member of Parliament to contest the election of the North Central provincial Council (NCPC) as the chief ministerial candidate of the JVP. He submitted his letter of resignation to the Secretary General of the parliament.

The annual festival of the historic Kathirkaamam Murukan temple located in the southern province is to commence on July 3 and to conclude on July 18 with the water-cutting ceremony (Theerththath thiruvizhaa) in the Maa’nikka Kangkai. Foot pilgrims from the eastern province are expected to enter Kathirkaamam area Tuesday, temple sources said. About three hundred Tamil teachers who have been working in Kandy district on transfer from the northern and eastern provinces are under special surveillance. The activities of teachers transferred from Ki’linochchi district are closely monitored, said Kandy Police Superintendent (SP) Sisira Weerakone addressing a conference held in Kandy district secretariat, according to a news report carried in Monday’s Thinakkural.

The Special Task Force (STF) commandos in Batticaloa city have been collecting personal of details of the employees of the various business establishments as well as the occupants of the residences within Batticaloa police division for the past four days, residents in the city said. The STF commandos have further threatened the shop owners that if any bombs fixed to bicycles parked outside their stores ever explode and cause causalities to the commandos, they would be targeted in retaliation.

More than 300 unemployed graduates launched a token protest Monday around 7:00 a.m in front of Jaffna Main Educational complex in Nalloor preventing the officials entering the Education Offices, in a demand for immediate employment, sources in Jaffna said. The graduates said that they were prepared to launch a continuous fast protest from Tuesday if the authorities were not ready to meet their demands.
